The Archers

Powell & Pressburger

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger signed their films together as The Archers, and nobody in British cinema dreamed bigger or in stronger colour. Four of theirs, and the one Powell made alone that cost him his career.

  1. 1
    A Canterbury Tale

A land girl and two sergeants, one American, hunt a man who pours glue in women’s hair on the road to Canterbury.

  2. 2
A Matter of Life and Death

An airman who should have died argues for his life in a black-and-white heaven while Earth blazes in colour.

  3. 3
    Black Narcissus

Nuns in a Himalayan palace, a wind that never drops, and the reddest lipstick in British film.

  4. 4
    The Red Shoes

A dancer made to choose between love and the stage, and a seventeen-minute ballet that chooses for her.

  5. 5
    Peeping Tom

Powell on his own, twelve years later: a killer’s camera, and the reviews that finished him.
